The importance of getting your gear to your destination safely is something often overlooked by many people. Most airport baggage handlers aren't terribly concerned with what style of board you're riding or how your new bindings match your boots perfectly. They're just doing their job, and that is to get the baggage into the cargo bay of the plane. Period. The best way to avoid unwanted damage to your prized possessions is to 1) Invest in a good quality, padded travel bag and 2) Pack efficiently and effectively.
The more you can pack in your gear bag (without exceeding airline weight limits) the more padding for your board. It's also a good idea to pack a change of clothes and a few necessities in your carry on just in case your checked baggage decides to go off to a different destination.
